Fraser Valley
Llama and
Alpaca Club

History of the club . . .

1999 to 2001

By Jane Pinkerton

1999

Our Annual Meeting was held at Newlands Golf and Country Club on February 5th, when the following members were elected to the executive:

President Al DeJong
Vice-President Cathy Purney
Recording Secretary Linda Kennett
Public Relations Secretary Linda Giesbrecht
Treasurer Rose-Ann Lewis

Following dinner and the meeting, the auction started with our male models showing off auctions items. Oh what outfits they wore, thanks to Anna Helewka! Once again it was a successful auction and raffle with Ted and Joanne Banner as auctioneers.

At our April meeting Jim and Amy Logan’s Click and Reward video was shown — a preview to the clinic held at the Block Family Farm in early May.

Jim Logan is seen here working with Burgundy ’95 during the Click and Reward Clinic.

Many members took advantage of a shearing day with Kiwi, held at the MacDonald’s farm in early May.

Llama Day was held again at the Block Family Farm at the end of May.

Our Fun Day was also held at the Block Family Farm and included a Jackpot judged by Pat and Bob Hilton. This was followed by a pot luck BBQ.

Our hikes this year took us to the Othello tunnels, Golden Ears, Matsqui Trail and several members went on a three-day hike to the Shulaps Range, about fifty miles west of Lillooet.

After a steep, long, hot climb, we reached the Shulaps Meadows where we set up camp.

Maple Ridge Fair was attended by the 4H and they were also at Agrifair and the PNE. At Agrifair this year we had a fibre display and demonstrations of felting and spinning and a packing demonstration. The PNE llama and alpaca show was well attended along with the popular Jackpot.

The second West Coast Breeders’ Sweepstakes was held at Tradex, a beautiful location. Diane Gendron Cooney organized a wonderful fashion show.

Parades included Yarrow, Mount Lehman, Abbotsford (as part of the Agrifair entry) and the Chilliwack Christmas Parade of Lights.

The Chilliwack Christmas Parade of Lights is now held after dark which makes a spectacular sight.

and members from Washington State:

2000

Our Annual Meeting was held at Newlands Golf and Country Club on February 5th, with seventy-five members attending. At this meeting the following members were elected to the executive:

President Al DeJong
Vice-President Cathy Purney
Recording Secretary Linda Kennett
Public Relations Secretary Linda Giesbrecht
Treasurer Erin Moore

After dinner and meeting the auction was held with Vern Drader as auctioneer. The highest selling item was a handwoven blanket by Elfrida Lambert which sold for $280. The raffle followed the auction.

Shearing day with Kiwi was again held at the end of April and many members took advantage of having their animale shorn early in the year.

A Grooming and Showmanship clinic was held May 7th, given by Niki Anderson-Kuklinski, held at MacDonald’s farm , was well attended.

Parades included Bradner, Mount Lehman, Abbotsford, Chilliack Christmas Light Parade. Be sure to come out next year and join us.

Maureen Dones and Don Gibbs took Beaujolais ’98 and Victorianna in the Bradner Parade which was a first for all four of them.

Our Fun Day was held at the Block Family Farm with Neil and Pam Caine judging the Jackpot. Janet Boyhan demonstrated felting and Rebecca Lavell demonstrated needle felting. This was followed by a pot luck BBQ and as always members had a good time.

Martin Best’s llama decided to jump off before the stairs.

Agrifair Co-Chairs were Anna Helewka and Linda Loynes with Trev Lewis continuing as liaison with Agrifair. We had a fibre display and demonstrations of felting, Kool-Aid dyeing and spinning and also a packing demonstration. The new addition this year was a very successful fashion show.

Spinners and felters met regularly throughout the year and many of their items were on display or in the fashion show.

The PNE, chaired by Anne MacDonald was a successful llama and alpaca show together with the popular Jackpot.

The third West Coast Sweepstakes, held at Murray Creek Ranch in Langley added a maturity class, a fleece class and a handspinners choice class.

A number of members went on a four day hike to Taylor Creek near Goldbridge, west of Lillooet. The scenery was wonderful and everyone had a great time.

Derry Walsh and Bill Chase are shown here crossing a snow patch with their llamas high in the mountains in the Taylor Basin area.

In addition to the usual areas for our hikes, we tried some new areas — some good and some not - Elk Mountain is not recommended for llamas! We went to Othello tunnels twice — once in May and again in the fall. This is an easy hike and very picturesque.

The fall trip to the Othello tunnels was spectacular. Trev Lewis and Linda Loynes are about to leave the bright sunshine and enter one of the four dark tunnels.

The llama and alpaca walk in Fort Langley was a great success with 39 llamas and 70 people on the walk, including one cart. Darrel & Judi Smith have an on-line photo album from this year’s event.

Members who joined our club in 2000 included:

Ishbel Cameron
Maureen Dones and Don Gibbs
Olive and Gerry Kriese
Charles and Shirley Ulland
Helen and Richard Ward
and from Washington State
Kathi Marlowe and David Werstler
