History of the club . . .

1996 to 1998

1996

Our annual meeting was held January 27th at the Best Western in Aldergrove, at which time the following members were elected to the executive committee:

President Al DeJong

Public Relations Secretary Rebecca Lavell
Treasurer Rose-Ann Lewis

The dinner and meeting was followed by a fund raising action.

Club members participated in the Great Canadian Pet Fair, Agrifair, PNE, a display at the Chilliwack Fair, hikes and parades, the annual walk in October which was held in Fort Langley this year. The Sheep and Wool Fair was cancelled.



A very successful John Mallon training clinic was held in April at Long Buckby Farm, home of Pat and Bob Hilton. Fun Day this year was held at the Block Farmily Farm.



Spinners kept on spinning and a felting clinic was held. Members are shearing more of their animals and having more fibre processed.

An insert to the club brochure, listing newer members was printed.

1997

This year’s annual dinner was held at the Newlands Golf and Country Club on February 15th at which time the following members were elected to the executive:

Treasurer Rose-Ann Lewis

The dinner and meeting were followed by a very successful fund raising auction and raffle.

Members participated in the Great Canadian Pet Fair, 4H Show at Maple Ridge, Agrifair, (organized by Trev Lewis from his wheelchair) and the PNE which included a llama and alpaca sale. There was also a display at the Chilliwack Fair.

Fun Day at the Block Family Farm was well attended with Denice Lillies judging and giving tips for showing. This was followed by a pot luck dinner.


Members went for walks on the Pitt Meadows dikes, Nicomen Island, to Golden Ears (one in very heavy rain) and the Matsqui Trail. Parades included Bradner, Mount Lehman, the walk in Fort Langley which included carts, the Santa Claus Parade in Chilliwack and the Jingle Bell Run in Langley.

It was a beautiful, cold, sunny day for the Santa Claus Parade in Chilliwack.



Spinners met regularly and had a fibre display at the Canadian Classic Sheep and Wool Fair in Chilliwack. A felting clinic by members Pat Hilton, Rose-Ann Lewis and Jane Pinkerton was given for the 4H club.

1998

The dinner and meeting was followed by a fund raising auction with auctioneers Joanne and Ted Banner.

In April the Club hosted a Grooming and Showing Clinic by Judi Hyder Moser, held at the Block Family Farm.

At our spring meeting Dr. Gail Jewell talked on holistic medicine in relations to our animals.

Parades included Country Living Days in Chilliwack, Yarrow Days, Mount Lehman Parade on Canada Day followed immediately by the Abbotsford Parade. We also attended the Fort Langley walk and the Santa Claus Parade in Chilliwack.

Stephanie Walker leads the llama section of the Agrifair contingent of the Abbotsford parade on July first.




Llama Day held at the Block Family Farm, organized by Henry and Laura Block and Bob and Pat Hilton brought over 2000 members of the public to see animals from over 30 breeders, displays, demos and attend seminars.

At Llama Day, Marnie Vollans showed the television cameras how calm her llama was by having ther dog do tricks on the llama’s back.



Maple Ridge Fair was attended by the 4-H, Agrifair and the PNE by members and the 4H. The PNE had animals in Animal House for the entire length of the Fair.
Fun Day was once again held at the Block Family Farm with our judge Denice Lillies followed by a pot luck dinner.

Local hikes were ongoing and Marie Seabrook organized our first club hike to the Othello Tunnels in Hope.


In July some members went on a three-day hike in Manning Park to Monument 78 which is the beginning of the Pacific Crest Trail. A second trip was made in August after which Brian and Jane Pinkerton continued for five more days on to Harts Pass in Washington State. They exchanged animals at the border with Janet Boyhan who had travelled north and she then took the Canadian animals to back to their own home.

The first West Coast Sweepstakes was held at the Block Family Farm with over 150 llamas, alpacas and suris in attendance.



The annual Llama Walk in Fort Langley was superbly organized this year thanks to Linda Kennett.

Derry Walsh and her llama were surrounded by curious onlookers in Fort Langley.



The spinners and felters continued to meet throughout the year.
