The members of the Fraser Valley Llama and Alpaca Club mostly live in the Lower Mainland area of British Columbia with some in other areas of British Columbia, and a number in Northwest Washington State. Some members may have one or two llamas or alpacas while others have fifty or more. Many of the people who have joined lately are newcomers and are able to learn much from some of the more experienced owners.

Llamas and alpacas are native to South America and are found mostly in Bolivia, Chile and Peru. For thousands of years the llama has been used as a pack animal in the Andes mountains. A number of the Fraser Valley Llama and Alpaca Club members enjoy hiking with their llamas, but the majority of members have llamas for the sheer enjoyment of having them around.

Llamas and alpacas are a wonderful livestock to have, they need little care. As long as they have some fresh hay and clean water, they are very content. They are easy on pastures as their feet are padded. A three-sided shelter is all they require to get them out of the worst weather but normally they prefer to be outside.

Both the llama and the alpaca, as well as the vicuña, are valued for their fibre which comes in all many shades from white to black, along with many variations of browns. They may be a solid colour or may have a combination of several colours.

There is a lot of information about camelids on this site as there are links to pages with articles from the club newsletter on many aspects of the llama business. There are pages showing club members on various hikes, and at various shows as well as pages on training your animals. There are hundreds of photos on this site, clicking on the thumbnails below will take you to some of the interesting pages.
